The BBFC is an independent company that was et up in 1912 to regulate and classify films. Films are given certain ratings depending on their content. The following ratings are given:‘PG’ films should not be seen as disturbing to a child aged approximately eight or older. General viewing is classified however some of the scene may be unsuitable for much younger audiences, for this reason adults are advised to consider whether or not the content is suitable for child viewing.
‘12’ and ‘12A’ categories are awarded to a film where the material within the film is seen as suitable for those aged 12 and over. The ‘12A’ category only exists in cinemas, anyone under the age of 12 may see a ‘12A’ film if they are accompanied by an adult. ‘12A’ films are not recommended for those under the age of 12, however if an adult feels in their judgement that the film is suitable they may see the film.
No one under the age of 15 may see a '15' film in the cinema or rent or buy a film with this rating.
Anyone under the age of 18 is not permitted to view an '18' film in the cinema, rent the film or purchase it.
‘R18’ is a category that is legally restricted for explicit works of a sexual nature involving adults. Films with this rating may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas and in licensed sex shops.
